A single-school district in Siskiyou County, serving the Shasta Valley since 1884.
Since 1884
The Big Springs Union Elementary School District was established on July 11, 1884, and today operates one school: Big Springs Elementary School. We sit at 7405 Highway A-12 in Montague, California, in the Shasta Valley farming communities under Mount Shasta.
Being a single-school district means decisions get made close to the students they affect. The superintendent is also the principal. The board meets in the same building where students learn. When something needs fixing, there isn't a chain of offices between the problem and the person who can solve it.

What's New for 2026–27
A summer 2026 campus and office reorganization added a dedicated District Office area, a room for PTO and Boosters, a Resource Teacher office, and a counselor and student-support office. Space was also identified and prepared for CTE and innovation work.
Advanced CTE equipment and programming — CAD, 3D printing, laser engraving, and CNC fabrication — are still developing and depend on grant and funding awards.
One Campus, Preschool Through Eighth Grade
Big Springs is a single-school district. Preschool and child care, transitional kindergarten, elementary, and middle school all share one campus and one staff, so students move through the grades with adults who already know them.
Alongside the school day, families have the SAFE after-school and expanded learning program, Badger athletics and activities, student-support services, and a growing set of hands-on and innovation opportunities.
